France Trip, August 2012

Tuesday, August 21

Today we went to see Château de Chenonceau. As we approached the chateau grounds, we ran across a shrub maze. On the other side was a set of marble columns. Both the exterior and interior of the chateau were well-preserved and beautiful. It was built across the river Cher and was basically run and looked after by strong women over the centuries, including Diane Poitiers and Katherine de Medici. The sprawling gardens were gorgeous and in full bloom. We ate lunch afterward at the château cafe and then walked through the vast flower and vegetable gardens.

On the way back, we stopped at a wine cave. The cave system went back into the hill some 15 km. The numbers of wine bottles stored there were incredible. After the tour, we tasted some of their wines and bought a few. Their specialty was a sparkling wine made from Chenin Blanc grapes.
