California Trip, September 2014

Sunday, September 21

Took a nonstop flight from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, then rented a Cadillac ($2 a day more than a compact car) and drove northwest. Drove through Thousand Oaks, where Pat lived in the late 80's when he worked for Rockwell Scientific (now Teledyne).

Continued on the Ventura Freeway through Santa Barbara and then up to Santa Ynez, into wine country. Saw oil derricks out in the Pacific. I didn't realize there was so much oil extracted off shore here.

Santa Ynez area, looking north. Vineyards near bottom,
Los Padres National Forest near top.

The Santa Ynez Inn, where we are staying for three nights.
Beautiful! 10-ft ceilings, huge rooms, very old-world feel.

Our room overlooks a fountain on the main street of this little
wine-country town. Very peaceful. The TV pops up out of the cabinet
at the foot of the bed!
