Behind "Mad" King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein castle is a
gorge with a glorious waterfall.

A view of Neuschwanstein castle from the gorge bridge. When Ludwig was
18 he became king. He built three castles that were a bit "over the edge," and
this was one of them. It nearly depleted his family fortune, which
had taken them over 800 years to amass.

What a bizarre and strangely fairytale castle. Ludwig II never really got to live
in it, and much of the construction was never completed. Right after the
"Singer's Hall" was completed (he was an avid fan of Mahler), he was
pronounced insane by the government of Bavaria, stripped of his crown,
and then taken away and imprisoned near some other lake. Within a day
he was found drowned in the lake along with one of
his psychologists. Very mysterious.

Another view of the castle, here and below. (We were
enamored of it, and it's very photogenic.)
